Challenge: The Single Motor Propelled Wheelchair (SiMPL-WC) is a modular powered mobility device developed at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories. This project required the design, prototyping and testing of a fully functional user control system.
Process: I began by defining the required functionality of the chair and spec’ing out the corresponding internal hardware and wiring. From this point, I generated form concepts for the housing of the numerous components and of the user interface, always assuming the end user may have limited dexterity. This ideation brought the design to wide, easily accessible slide switches and textured speed limiting potentiometer.
After minor revisions by the engineering team, six copies were SLS printed, wired, and installed on the prototype SiMPL chairs.
